The Midday 10 Thu, Oct 8, 2026 ~60 seconds 12:30 ET

Oil sets the tone at midday. Brent crude is up 3.4% at $103.64 a barrel and US crude 3.0% at $90.89, after reports of attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and a storm threat in the Gulf of Mexico. The energy sector fund XLE rises 2.6% — the strongest sector by far.

The broad market slips a little: the S&P 500 is down 0.27% at 7,781, the Nasdaq Composite 0.51%, the Dow 0.24%, the Russell 2000 0.60%. But the equal-weight S&P fund RSP is flat (−0.04%) — the average stock is holding, the losses sit in the large chip and AI names. Chips fall again (SMH −1.0%, AMD −1.8%, TSMC −1.6%), and so do the power generators that sell electricity to data centres: Vistra −5.2%, Constellation −4.7%. Health care is the weakest sector (XLV −1.9%), with Eli Lilly down 4.0%.

PepsiCo beat on revenue and earnings this morning but cut its profit outlook for the year, as reported; the stock trades 1.1% higher, off a one-year low. The 10-year Treasury yield is little changed at 5.27%.

The ten lines

  1. 1

UP Oil: Brent +3.4% to $103.64, US crude +3.0% to $90.89; energy fund XLE +2.6%

    XLEBNOUSO

Reports cite more frequent attacks on tankers near the Strait of Hormuz and producers in the Gulf of Mexico shutting in output ahead of a possible hurricane. Energy is the only sector with a clear gain today. The Fed's minutes, out on Wednesday, named oil near $100 as a main inflation risk — Brent is now above that line for a second day.

  2. 2

    LEVEL Narrow dip: S&P 500 −0.27% at 7,781, Nasdaq −0.51%, Dow −0.24%, Russell 2000 −0.60% — equal-weight S&P flat

    SPYQQQRSPIWM

The equal-weight S&P fund RSP is down only 0.04% against 0.27% for the index — the reverse of Wednesday, when the average stock fell more than the index. Today the weight of the losses sits in a few large names. The S&P 500 now trades below its old closing record of 7,798.99, which it had reclaimed on Tuesday. The volatility index VIX is at 15.34.
