Investors in the EU and the EEA cannot buy SPY, QQQ or most other US-listed funds: EU rules require a key information document that US issuers do not publish. The same indices are available as European UCITS funds, mostly domiciled in Ireland and listed on Xetra and in London. Tracking difference = fund total return − S&P 500 Net Total Return, in dollars on the London line, percentage points a year, annualised, as of 2026-09-22. The net index reinvests dividends after a 30% US withholding tax; an Irish fund pays 15%, which is why these funds come out ahead of it over the long run. London closes four and a half hours before New York, so the one-year figure carries timing noise; the longer windows are the ones to read.
The European version against the US original
Same currency (the dollar line in London), same dates: how far the UCITS fund ended up from the US fund it copies. Positive = the European version returned more. The gap holds the fee, the tax on dividends, the EU capping rules and the earlier London close.

"Same index" = the UCITS fund follows the index the US fund follows. "Same index family" = same provider and market under EU fund rules, which cap the largest holdings harder, so returns can diverge. "Related index" = a close relative, explained under the fund. Why can I not buy SPY or QQQ from Germany or France?
EU rules (PRIIPs) require a key information document in the investor’s language for every packaged product sold to retail investors. US fund issuers do not publish one, so EU brokers do not offer US-listed ETFs to retail clients. The same funds exist as European UCITS versions, listed on Xetra, the London Stock Exchange and other European exchanges.
Why are most of these funds domiciled in Ireland?
For funds that hold US shares, Ireland’s tax treaty with the United States cuts the withholding tax on US dividends to 15%. Funds domiciled in Luxembourg usually lose 30%. On an index yielding about 1.2%, that is roughly 0.18 percentage points a year — more than the fee of the cheapest S&P 500 funds, and it shows up in the tracking difference.
Accumulating or distributing — what is the difference?
An accumulating fund reinvests dividends inside the fund; a distributing fund pays them out to the investor. The index exposure is the same. Which one suits an investor depends on their own tax rules and whether they want the cash flow — the table only says which type each fund is.
What does "same index family" mean?
The European fund follows the same index provider and market as the US fund but under EU fund rules, which cap the largest holdings harder (no single company above roughly 10%, all positions above 5% together under 40%). In concentrated markets — Samsung in Korea, TSMC in Taiwan, Nvidia in semiconductors — the European fund can hold less of the heavyweight and end up with a different return.
