Best session in months — and every big print that followed it got sold

The Morning 10 Wed, Aug 5, 2026 ~90 seconds 08:00 CET

Tuesday was the strongest session in months — QQQ up 3.40% to 723.85, semis up 6.80%, Palantir closing 29% higher — and then the two biggest prints of the night beat on every line and got sold anyway. AMD gave back its entire 7% run in the after-market; SpaceX, in its first quarter as a public company, beat revenue by 15% and fell 7% on a capex line of $18.4bn. Asia followed the session and not the prints, with Korea up 4.15% and Japan up 3.40%. Both halves are true, and the thing that sorts them is not whether a company beat.

  1. AMD — beat everything, and round-tripped the whole day
  2. SpaceX — first print as a public company, sold on the capex line
  3. The session itself — a melt-up the Magnificent Seven sat out
  4. Levels — two of three arbiters cleared, 746 is the one that is left
  5. The sorting rule is capex, not beat or miss
  6. Closelook indices — our own build-out cohort split down the middle
  7. The record quarter is substantially two companies marking up their AI stakes
  8. Asia followed the session, not the prints — except Hong Kong
  9. Six prints and two labour reads today

  1. AMD — beat everything, and round-tripped the whole day Context
    What
AMD posted record revenue of $11.54bn with adjusted EPS of $1.66 against $1.62 expected. Data centre revenue was $6.7bn, up 107% year over year, and now supplies 58% of the company. Third-quarter guidance came in around $13bn plus or minus $300m against $12.51bn consensus — roughly 41% annual growth — with gross margin held near 56%. The stock closed the regular session at 518.58, up 7.00%, after trading as high as 530.13 intraday. It then fell about 8% in the after-market, which puts it near 477 — below Monday's close of 484.64.
    If
The after-hours level holds into the cash open rather than being bought back in the first hour.
    Why
This is not a company that missed. It beat, guided above consensus, and doubled its data centre business — and the market handed back a 7% day and then some. The name was up roughly 140% on the year going in, so the bar was the run, not the number.
    Then
Read the path, not the net. AMD spent Tuesday being bought as semis beta and the evening being sold as itself. The two are different trades in the same ticker.
  2. SpaceX — first print as a public company, sold on the capex line Context
    What
SPCX reported second-quarter revenue of $7.8bn against roughly $6.8bn expected, a 15% beat, with a net loss of $541m against about $1.0bn a year ago. Capital spending was approximately $18.4bn for the quarter — about 2.4 times the quarter's revenue. The stock fell roughly 7% postmarket. It had closed at 125.33, up 9.43%, after 114.53 on Monday: two sessions of about 15.6% straight into its own first print. It listed in mid-June near 192.50 and had traded as low as 108.37 on 31 July, some 44% below the debut.
    If
The stock holds above the 108.37 low from 31 July rather than resuming the post-listing slide.
    Why
Same structure as AMD, twice in one night: run hard into the print, beat, hand it back. But note the honest qualifier — reporting around the print flagged that the earnings date also triggers the first large post-listing share unlock, so part of this is mechanical float rather than a verdict on the quarter.
    Then
A 15% revenue beat that gets sold on the spending line tells you what the market is currently unwilling to fund, which is the through-line of the whole night.
  3. The session itself — a melt-up the Magnificent Seven sat out Structure
    What
QQQ closed at 723.85, up 3.40%. SOXX rose 6.80% to 542.21, SMH 5.55%, XLK 4.98%, IGV 4.70%. SPY added 1.80% and small caps 1.85%. But MAGS — the Magnificent Seven vehicle — rose just 0.85%. Healthcare was flat at minus 0.09% and financials added 0.87%. Palantir closed up 29.45% at 162.66. Marvell rose 12.81%, SanDisk 10.84%, Micron 7.62%, Broadcom 6.61%.
    If
The semis-over-megacap spread persists on the next down day rather than only on up days.
    Why
Semis beating the megacaps eight to one is the second consecutive session with that tell — Monday's version was MAGS up 0.1% against XLK up 3.7%. Leadership has moved out of the seven names and into the parts of the complex that were being sold two weeks ago.
    Then
This is a rotation with an index behind it, not an index rally with a rotation inside it. Those decay differently.

Today in point 11: why three sold beats in one night is a pricing rule rather than a mood, what our own build-out layers said that no sector ETF could have told you, how much of this quarter's record profit is a mark on a private AI company rather than a sale to a customer, why 746 and not 700 is the level that changes the name of this move — and what the book does with a confirmation that arrived alongside its own biggest holdings being sold on their prints.
