Thursday's sell-off had an address. It hit the companies that build AI hardware and the giants that pay for it — and stopped almost exactly where AI stops being a cost and starts being a service. One rung below, the buyers were waiting.

The ladder, rung by rung

We track the AI economy as a ladder, and our index family is built along it. At the top sits the build-out: the chips, the machines that make them, the optics and power that wire data centers together. That is our Rubin 100, and it fell 6.9% on Thursday — 7.4% on the week.

One rung down is the rented layer: cloud platforms and compute services that sell AI capacity by the hour. Our Agentic Ecosystem index lost 3.2%, less than half the build-out's drop. One more rung down are the applications built on top — our Agentic Winners. They rose 0.7% on the chip complex's hardest day and hold a positive week at +0.9%.

The pattern is not subtle. The further a company sits from the hardware budget, the better its Thursday. Our daily AI board puts it in two numbers: 110 of the 126 build-out names are losing relative strength, while 33 of the 40 application names are gaining it.
