Midday: Chips Fade, Software Bounces, Meta +6%, Oil $101
The trade flips at midday: chips fade, software bounces — Meta +6%, Cloudflare +9%, Datadog +6% while oil holds $101 and the 10-year hits 4.85%
Two days of chips-up, software-down are running backwards at midday. The semiconductor ETFs opened higher and have given it all back, Nvidia, Broadcom, TSMC and ASML are lower, and the buying has moved to names with a catalyst: Cloudflare +9% on an OpenAI security partnership, Datadog +6%, Meta +6% on its Muse agent, Astera Labs +5%, Marvell +5% after its CEO lifted the two-year outlook. The rest of the market is weaker, not stronger: the Russell 2000 is down 1.2%, Booking, Shopify, SpaceX, the cruise lines and Canada are being sold on oil at $101 and a trade fight, and the 10-year yield is at 4.85%, its highest since 2023. Zscaler and Samsara are graded at the close.

The Midday 10 Wed, Sep 9, 2026 ~60 seconds 12:00 ET
For two sessions the tape had one rule: buy the companies that build the physical AI plant, sell the companies that sell software seats. At midday on Wednesday the rule is running backwards, and it matters how. The semiconductor index opened up more than 1% and is flat; Nvidia is down 0.8%, Broadcom 2.1%, TSMC 1.1%, ASML 2.2%, while the memory names AMD, Micron, SanDisk and Western Digital still hold gains of 2% to 3%. The money that left the chip leaders went into specific software and platform names with a reason attached: Cloudflare is up 9% after announcing a vulnerability-remediation service built with OpenAI, Datadog 6%, Meta 6% on the launch of its Muse personal agent, Astera Labs 6%, Marvell 5% after its chief executive told CNBC the two-year revenue outlook had risen by $6.5 billion. The software ETF itself is still down half a percent, so this is a bid for names, not yet for the group.
Around it the market is weaker. The S&P 500 is down 0.6%, the Dow 0.8%, the Russell 2000 1.2%, and the losers are the ones oil at $101 hurts: Booking, SpaceX, the cruise lines and Canada after the White House blocked Canadian motorcycles, dairy and alcohol and Ottawa's $20 billion of retaliatory tariffs took effect. The 10-year Treasury yield is at 4.85%, up 4 basis points to a new high for this cycle, and the long bond fund TLT has broken below the $82 level our wave count was watching. Brent is at $101, up 3%. Zscaler and Samsara get their print-record grades at the bell, and both have moved toward the middle of their bands since Tuesday.

The ten lines

BOARD ETF board: chips flat after an up open, cloud and cyber slightly up, the broad market down with the Russell −1.2%
The board has changed sign since Tuesday, but not symmetrically. The semiconductor ETFs are flat to slightly lower, SOXX +0.2% and SMH −0.3%, after opening more than 1% higher. The cloud fund CLOU and the cyber fund CIBR are up 0.4% each; the broad software fund IGV is still down 0.5% because ServiceNow −1.4%, Shopify −3.7% and Microsoft −0.4% outweigh the winners. The indices are lower across the board: S&P 500 −0.6%, Nasdaq 100 −0.5%, Dow −0.8%, Russell 2000 −1.2%, and the VIX is up 5% at 16.6. A rotation that reverses inside a falling market is a different animal from one that reverses inside a rising one; today it is the former.

UP Cloudflare +9%, Meta +6%, Datadog +6%, Astera Labs +5%, Marvell +5% — the winners all have a headline
NETMETADDOGALABMRVL
Cloudflare is up about 9% at $310 after announcing Vulnerability Discovery and Remediation, a service inside its Managed Defense product that uses OpenAI's Daybreak models to find high-risk vulnerabilities and generate patches at the network edge. Meta is up 6.4% at $653 after releasing Muse on Tuesday, a personal agent that books travel and sends email on the user's behalf, US-only to start. Datadog is up 6.4% at $224 and Astera Labs 5.7% at $305, both without a fresh company release, both names that fell hard in the software and connectivity sell-offs of the past week. Marvell is up 5.0% at $237 after chief executive Matt Murphy told CNBC the company now expects about $12 billion of revenue this year and $18 billion next, up from $10 billion and $13.5 billion in December, with more than $15 billion of next year's total from data centres; the investor day is October 6. Five names, five reasons, one pattern: the bid found the software and platform names that had a story today, not the group.

DOWN Booking −4%, SpaceX −4%, Shopify −4%, the cruise lines and Canada lower — oil at $101 and a trade fight
The selling has a theme, and it is fuel. Booking is down 4.3% at $173 after Tuesday's 6.7% fall, Shopify 3.7% at $129 for a second day, Royal Caribbean 2.3%, United 1.0%, Delta flat, with Brent at $101 and US heating oil up 4.6% on the day. SpaceX is down 4.4% at $147, giving back Tuesday's 3.7% gain and more. Canada is the other loser: the iShares Canada fund is down 0.7% after the White House signed orders blocking Canadian motorcycles, dairy and alcoholic drinks and Ottawa's $20 billion of retaliatory tariffs took effect on Tuesday, with Prime Minister Carney saying he is not seeking an escalation but wants to accelerate decoupling from US dependence. Two days ago the losers were software names with no news; today the losers are the companies for whom $100 oil is an input cost, which is a more ordinary kind of selling.
